SALEM—The Salem Multicultural Institute and AC Gilbert’s Discovery Village are proud to announce the 2010 World Beat Festival Art Contest winners. Each year, children from kindergarten through 12th grade submit artwork based on the Festival’s theme, which this year is the country of Bhutan. Winning artwork will be used in various promotions for the Festival, which takes place on June 26-27 at Riverfront Park in downtown Salem.

This year’s event welcomes a cultural delegation from the little-known country of Bhutan, which is nestled deep in the Himalaya mountain range.

Winners are:

High school individual – Danielle Figueroa, 9th grade, West Salem HS
High school honorable mention – Miranda Hire, 10th grade, West Salem HS; Ryan Garaventa, 11th grade, Blanchet Catholic School
High school classroom – West Salem HS

K-8 individual – Michael Tuttle, 7th grade, Blanchet Catholic School
K-8 honorable mention – Daniel Sloan, 4th grade, Immanuel Lutheran School
K-8 classroom – Blanchet Catholic School

The Salem Multicultural Institute was founded in 1997 to create an atmosphere of openness and appreciation for people of all ethnic backgrounds. The 2010 World Beat Festival will be the 13th annual event.

AC Gilbert’s Discovery Village offers year-round fun with indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits that promote learning through play. The hands-on children’s museum invites families and groups to enjoy a unique educational experience, and is located at Riverfront Park in downtown Salem.
